Midland Counties Championship Show Show 2014 Critique

I would like to thank Midland Counties Canine Society for inviting me to award CCs at their Championship Show and also to all the exhibitors who supported me with so many quality deerhounds. I felt very privileged to be judging at this show which was a pleasurable and enjoyable experience.

DOGS

MPD (1,1)

PD (1,0) 1. Hall’s Wolfcastle Caradog. Well proportioned, 9 month old puppy with good bone and substance. Handsome head. Shapely outline with nice depth of chest and low set hocks. Well knuckled feet. Harsh coat. Moved well once settled.

JD (1,1)

PGD (4,2)

1. Lewis’ Luckhurst Nairn. Very shapely, handsome, well boned 2 year old dog. Typical head and expression. Good lay of shoulder, nice rise over loin and fall away with good width throughout. Well knuckled feet. Moved freely and easily.

2. Greenhalgh’s Regalflight Poacher at Leksmoor. 2 year old dog with masculine head and neat small ears. Well knuckled feet. Nice harsh coat. Good width throughout however preferred depth and topline of winner. Moved well.

LD (4,2)

1. Barret’s Pharcourse Noah at Stranwith. Very handsome, extremely well balanced dog with strong bone. Masculine head with lovely expression and dark eye. Strong neck leading into well laid shoulders, plenty of depth of chest and strong hindquarters. Low set hocks. Nice harsh coat. Moved freely and soundly with drive. Well presented. CC

2. Owen & Brodie’s Luckhurst Nebo to Wolfcastle. Well balanced dog with good bone. Handsome masculine head. Nice depth of chest and good width throughout however, preferred the overall topline and hindquarters of 1. Moved effortlessly.

OD (3,0)

A very close decision in a very strong class of quality exhibits however, on the day I preferred the movement of 1.

1. Peach’s Kilbourne Nico. Shapely, 3 year old, well proportioned dog with good bone. Handsome head with lovely expression. Good angulation with excellent topline. Strong hindquarters with low set hocks. Harsh coat. Moved effortlessly and soundly with drive. Well presented. RCC

2. Morton & Morgan’s Ch Cotherstone Shot and Steel. Strong, dark grey, correctly proportioned dog with plenty of bone. Good angulation throughout. Masculine head with strong neck leading into excellent front with plenty of depth of chest and heart room. Moved soundly and with drive. Well presented.

3. Wilson’s Hamiltonhill Fred D Mercury

An extremely close decision between the first 2 however, on the day the movement of the winner was more settled .

1. Taylor’s Ormanstar Cherry Blossom. Dark grey, feminine 7 month old puppy. Lovely, shapely outline with plenty of bone and substance. Beautiful head and neat ears. Excellent front and depth of chest. Low set hocks. Moved well for so young a puppy. Well handled.

2. Bailey’s Greyflax Teenspirit. Another very feminine, well boned 7 month old puppy with beautiful head. Shapely outline with nice width throughout. Good fallaway and well knuckled feet. Moved well once settled.

3. Wilbraham’s Marivon Fallon

1. Peach’s Kilbourne Zoe. This most promising, quality, correctly constructed, 11 month old puppy with good bone and substance caught my attention immediately. Beautiful feminine head. Excellent front assembly, correct topline and fallaway with strong hindquarters. Low set hocks. Well knuckled feet. Harsh coat. Moved freely with confidence. Well presented and handled. BP

2. O’Brien & Quinn’s Araceta Butterfly. 10 month old very feminine, shapely puppy with beautiful head. Good width overall with lovely topline. Good fallaway and width across quarters. Well knuckled feet. Harsh coat. Moved well.

3. Davis’ Marivon Florence.

1. Meer’s Shagiead Aunty Hetty for Lordswell. Feminine, well boned young bitch with beautiful head, soft expression and dark eye. Strong neck leading into good lay of shoulder. Good width throughout and depth of chest. Moved well.

2. Rhodes’ Regalflight Raffia of Lairigefyne. Very feminine, shapely, young bitch with beautiful head, dark eye and neat ears. Strong neck and good bone. Nice depth and fallaway. Harsh crisp coat. Moved well once settled.

3. Day & O’Brien’s Celticmoon Shadow Huntress.

A very strong class.

1. Taylor’s Kilbourne Pandora to Talorpeche. This young, well boned feminine bitch of excellent construction caught my eye immediately. Beautiful, typical head and neat ears. Strong neck flowing into well laid shoulder. Excellent depth and width throughout with strong hindquarters and low set hocks. Well knuckled feet. Harsh coat. Moved easily and freely with drive whilst maintaining topline. Well presented. I felt that she was fit for purpose. CC and BOB

2. Owen, Brodie & Cody’s Wolfcastle Greyce. This very shapely, extremely well balanced, dark grey young bitch of correct proportion also caught my eye. Beautiful feminine head with lovely dark eye. Strong neck flowing into excellent front. Good depth of chest. Low set hocks. Well knuckled feet. Movement was sound with drive. RCC

3. Peach’s Ehlaradawn Tilia.

LB (6,1)

A close decision in a class of quality exhibits.

1. Constantine’s Gentiehun Adelaide of Kaleginy. Very shapely, well constructed, feminine bitch with pleasing head and dark eye. Good bone and strong neck. Excellent depth of chest and width throughout with balanced angulation. Well knuckled feet. Harsh coat. Moved well.

2. Ellse’s Kilbourne Unity. Feminine bitch with beautiful head and lovely dark eye. Strong neck. Good angulation and plenty of depth throughout. Lovely harsh coat. Well balanced which showed on the move however, preferred topline and hindquarters of winner.

3. Stuart & Holt’s Pyefleet Skatha at Ollandsheart.

OB (6,2)

A close decision in another very strong class with quality exhibits.

1. Bailey’s Greyflax Just Peachy. Very elegant, light grey feminine bitch with beautiful head with soft expression. Well boned. Good reach of neck flowing into excellent front assembly. Low set hocks. Harsh coat. Movement was sound and effortless. Well presented and handled.

2. Redmond & Friend’s Ch Shagiead Lady Sea with Greybrows. An elegant, well constructed feminine bitch. Beautiful head with strong neck leading into excellent front. Good width throughout Well knuckled feet. Harsh coat. Moved well and beautifully presented.

3. Morton & Morgan’s Ch Cotherstone Duchenne
